Browman Collections Internship

Join the HMFM Curatorial team as a Browman intern! Preserving and collecting our community’s history is an integral part of the museum’s purpose. The work done in the Collections Department is essential to ensure that these important stories and artifacts will be available for future generations to research, view, and share. As an intern you will discover the behind-the-scenes workings of a historical museum by assisting in the daily duties of the Collections Department to care for and interpret artifacts found in the museum’s permanent collection.

Examples of projects

As a Browman Intern, you will become familiar with all aspects of museum work:  collections management, interpretation, exhibit design and installation, working with volunteers, etc.  Within the Collections Department, you may do one or more of the following projects:

  • Collections database projects allow you to do data entry, research, and cataloging as part of the museum’s ongoing collections registration projects.
  • Collections preservation and storage projects allow you to work with the Curator of Collections to do hands-on collections management work including the rehousing and digitization of artifacts within the permanent collection.
  • Collections-related education and outreach projects give you the opportunity to create new educational or programmatic uses for the collections. This could include creating online/digital materials or developing a program that highlights specific artifacts.
  • You may also get to work with the Curator of Collections on the creation of temporary exhibits. Exhibit-based projects include doing research, writing interpretive texts, and designing exhibit panels.
