Save The Train

Help save your Willamette Engine #7! We are taking on the process of bringing this unique piece of Western Montana History back to life and need your help!

Welcome to the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula

At Fort Missoula, we invite visitors to explore the rich history and culture of western Montana found throughout our 32 park-like acres. Some of Missoula County’s fascinating history you will discover includes: early Fort history dating from its establishment in 1877 in the midst of the Indian Wars; the exploits of the all African American 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, the century or more of the forest products industry’s culture and innovations; and the World War II internment camp that once held over 2200 Italian and Japanese nationals. Over 20 beautiful preserved historic buildings and structures bring this history to life on our grounds. We feature rotating exhibits designed for every age group exploring a range of thought-provoking historical topics. We also host a variety of fun and educational events throughout the year. Please visit us at the Historical Museum. Your support and interest keeps Missoula’s history alive.

Dear Friends, Members, and our Community,

The Historical Museum has extended our temporarily closure for the safety, health and well-being of our guests, members, partners, volunteers, and staff through at least April 30th.

The closure does not impact the grounds, which are open and a wonderful place to burn off some energy while connecting with your community's past.

To help everyone through this difficult moment the HMFM team will be sharing local history, virtual tours, learning opportunities for our youth, puzzles and games, and weekly scavenger hunts to use while exploring the Museum grounds.

Be sure to keep an eye on the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula's Facebook and Instagram sites for stories and fun activities all about the places and people we love, as we will be posting much more frequently. Contact Jessie Rogers at if you have ideas of things you would like us to share.

Also, as many of you know we rely on your Donations and memberships to keep our state 's history preserved and relevant. We understand that these times are not easy for any of us, but if you have the ability to support your local cultural and service institutions, we are especially thankful.

Contact Matt Lautzenheiser, Executive Director Ph# 406 -258-3471 or email him for any questions or concerns.

As a community organization, our primary concern is the safety and well-being of the Missoula Community. Please remember to social distance when you are enjoying the grounds of the Historical Museum.

HMFM is here for you now and will be here when we all come out on the other side. And when that happens, we can 't wait to celebrate this wonderful community and our shared history with you! Thank you for your understanding at this challenging time for our country.

Please stay well,

Matt Lautzenheiser, Executive Director
